Marcel Proust’s A La Recherche du Temps Perdu is a war novel too many readers still ignore.
In the Shadow of Young Girls was awarded the Goncourt prestigious literary prize in 1919 as France was still recovering from the WW1 trauma. Marcel Proust did not go to war, yet his detailed and original account of the absurdities of war offers a critical perspective which continues to enrich a debate that is, sadly, all too contemporary.
